Jay: My question today is water. This is the monster jug I am drinking everyday. It’s 101.4 fluid ounces. On Biggest Loser, I probably had 6 or 7 of these a day. I know in Smarter Science of Slim you say we need to drink a lot of water and we all kind of know that, but what I think I want to know and other people want to know is if we drink the right amount of water, does it help us besides obviously flushing our system of toxins, does it actually for real? For real, does it help us lose weight? That’s my question. Love to hear your answer.
Jonathan: The short answer to your question is yes. Just drinking water enables your body to burn fat more effectively. Many, many studies have shown this. What’s actually happening is by drinking all of this water, you create what’s called a hypoosmotic state in your body where you change the concentration of certain substances in your blood and that enables your body to burn fat more effectively, not to mention if you drink cold water, your body has to heat that water up to body temperature and that also burns calories and that certainly can’t hurt. So, if you want to dig into the science a bit more, there are many, many studies that cover this. Two great ones are — I am reading from my notes here.
The first is and these are technical “Effects of changes in hydration on protein, glucose and lipid metabolism in man: impact on health.” That’s the first one. The second one, you can see how fun this is. The second one is “Effects of hypoosmolality on whole body lipolysis, which is burning fat, in man.” So, yes science covers this ad nauseam and it does help you burn fat.
Two other ways that drinking a lot of water is helpful though, first is that we often think we are hungry when we are actually thirsty. So, if we keep ourselves hydrated, we are much less likely to fall victim to inSANE snacking because we just won’t be as hungry as often. The other thing to keep in mind is that one of the primary causes of the healthcare crisis we are facing in our country today is individuals consuming sweetened beverages of soda, juice, sweetened coffees, things like that.
By drinking an abundance of water, we make it less likely that we are going to consume these hormonally destructive beverages and weight causing beverages. So, science shows that yes thanks to the hypoosmotic state it causes in our body, water does actively help our body to burn fat more effectively. It is also great to stay hydrated because it avoids snacking when you are not actually hungry and it also helps you to avoid drinking inSANE hormonally clog causing substances like soda and juice.
