Shane’s SANE Story: How to Lose 125lbs. Long-Term

by Shane Graham

“My journey started pretty much like everyone else. I have been through the Weight Watchers and tried exercising but could not lose but maybe 10-25 pounds. So it lasted maybe a month or two then went back the way I normally would eat. This opened my eyes on how easy and enjoyable a healthy lifestyle can be (vs. “dieting”).”

My journey has started pretty much like everyone else. I have been through the Weight Watchers and tried exercising but could not lose but maybe 10-25 pounds. So it lasted maybe a month or two then went back the way I normally would eat. Last year I told myself that I was going to finally to do it. I started eating better, cut down eating cheese burgers, french fries, and drinking pop. Notice that I said cut down, I was still eating them from time to time but also started eating alot more grilled chicken wraps along with some salads. Then I started exercising and was up to jogging 2 miles every other day and lifting dumbbells on the other days. I was in the belief of the calories in calories out. I lost probably a total of 25 pounds and then plateaued out.

After 3-4 months of the routine above I was thinking to myself that I should be losing a lot more. I was every bit of 400lbs if not more when I started and I had lost only 25lbs in a few months. I was putting in the work but not seeing the results like I thought I should. So in June I went and visited my doctor. I had a tumor on my pituitary gland when I was in high school that was removed and my hormones were out of balance so I thought maybe there was something wrong with my thyroid. Everything came back fine with my thyroid and my doctor suggested that I switch to a whole foods diet. He gave me the list of foods that he wanted me to start eating and it was a list out of The Smarter Science of Slim book. When I first looked at the list the first food that I saw was seafood, which I do not like. So I thought to myself and even told my wife that there is no way I can just eat veggies, meat, and fruit all the time. I mean what about pizza, hamburgers, and french fries that I love to eat.

So I went home and I think I looked over that list 20+ times trying to figure out the different things that I could eat off the list. I purchased the book a few days later and when it came in I read it from cover to cover over a weekend. I could not put it down, the information that was in the book opened my eyes on how one should be eating healthy, not to look at eating healthy as a diet but more of a lifestyle change (this was huge for me). It also opened my eyes of the stuff that I was putting in my body and how the food industry was pushing those products that were not healthy for me.

I will admit though after reading the book I still had my doubts about eating the foods on the list. But I thought to myself if I can cheeseburgers and foods that I know that make me fat all the time why cant I eat SANE. So last July I went to the store with the list in hand and bought my first cart of SANE foods. I have never looked back since then.

I do have my inSANE days, well they are not really days. If I do have inSANE moments I make sure I eat SANE for breakfast, snacks, and lunch but may go inSANE at dinner. I have had some really bad stretch of days where I have gone inSANE. I would beat myself up about it pretty hard but force myself to get back into SANE eating. It is not difficult to get back to SANE eating once you have gone a few months eating SANE.

I share the SANE whenever I can. I have two friends that have started SANE eating and have shared it with many more. If there is anything I can do to improve peoples eating lifestyle let me know.

Thank You!
